PREFACE
The VI Iberoamerican Conference on Phase Equilibria and Fluid Properties for Process Design took place in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) or Puerto Iguaçu (Argentina) in 2002 and Mexico was selected to organize the next conference in the EQUIFASE series. But for different reasons in 2004 due to the lack of organization by the original organizing committee in Mexico the conference was delayed. The “Comite Virtual” headed by Esteban Brignole decided in September 2004 to ask Luis Galicia to organize the event in Mexico. Later on Luis Galicia had a meeting with professors, Delia Moreno Juarez and Medardo Serna Gonzalez from The Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo to discuss if the conference could be held in Morelia, an affirmative decision was taken by Delia Moreno Juarez, Director of the Faculty of Chemistry.
The Morelia City is a small town with tranquil streets, which are silent witnesses of the history that has been gathered in every corner and every spot. The distinctive color of its beautiful constructions, made unmistakably of solid quarry, has earned it the nickname of "Ciudad Rosa" ( Pink City). The altitude in Morelia is around 1951 meters above sea level and has approximately a population of one million people. In 1991 UNESCO declared the historical center of Morelia a World Heritage site. Close to Morelia you will find the sanctuary of the Monarca Butterfly, a forest that turns into orange and black colors when the butterfly arrives from U.S.A. and Canada for reproduction.
The conferences will be held at the University's Cultural Center. Between 1991 and 1993 the Michoacan's University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo built the University's Cultural Center This building features a beautiful contemporary style; its main objective is the promotion of the arts and culture. In its facilities, several events are held, such as: painting expositions, book expositions, and expositions of documents about important characters in the history of Michoacan.
The organizing committee was pleased by the interest shown in this conference, and was delighted by the contribution not only from Iberoamerican countries but also from other parts of the world. For all this, we would like to thank the authors and the participants who came to Morelia.
Many people, many more than we are able to mention here, contributed to the organization of this EQUIFASE meeting. First, we wish to thank the scientific and organizing committees for their excellent support. In particular, we thank Prof. Esteban A. Brignole, who was responsible for the conference to be taking place in Mexico, unfortunately he could not come to Morelia due to medical recommendations. We thank Ms. Nayeli Jimenez, who was responsible for the conference website. We also wish to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the Assistant Chairman and Ph.D. student Felix F. Betancourt Cardenas in the preparation of the Proceedings.
Prof. Jose Luis Rico Cerda and Delia Moreno Juarez played an important role in the preparation of this conference. They worked extremely hard to make this conference a success. We are pleased to have a distinguished group of invited speakers from the Spain, Brazil, Argentina, United States, Netherlands, France, and Mexico and want to acknowledge the support of Conacyt of Mexico for making this possible. We are also very pleased to have with us, renowned researchers from Latin American and Europe as invited speakers at EQUIFASE.
Sadly we want to acknowledge the passing away of a dear colleague, Jose Tojo in whose honor we have a special session.
Finally, we thank the government agencies of Michoacan, as well as institutions, and private companies that in many different ways provided support for this conference.
You have our sincere welcome to Mexico and the Morelia region. We hope you will enjoy your stay, and hope that our meeting can renew traditional collaborations and open opportunities for many new contacts, research projects, and friendship.
