(1993-2012)
History
The School of Chemical Engineering and Extracting Industries (ESIQIE) of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional of Mexico (IPN), organized its First Symposium in October 1993 celebrating the 45th Anniversary of its foundation, inviting Prof. Ch.D. Holland and Prof. S.I. Sandler.
The ESIQIE organized the second edition in May 1996 (S.I. Sandler, B.C. Gates, J.C. Holste, K.R. Hall, R.G. Anthony, J.C. Slattery, Jean-Yves Clavier), the third edition in May 1998 (J. Boston, D.R. Paul, V. Krukonis, S.I. Sandler, J.G. Speight, J.C. Slattery, B.C. Gates, D. Richon, R.G. Anthony, R. Wellek, J.C. Holste, J.F. Molina, Jr.), the fourth edition in May 2000 (B.C. Gates, S.I. Sandler, R.G. Anthony, J.C. Holste, D. Richon, K. Fischer, R. Wellek) and the Fifth Symposium in May 2002 with the participation of S.I. Sandler, R.Wellek, D. Richon, J. Gmehling, A.S. Teja, J.J. de Pablo, P.M. Mathias, J.F. Brennecke, E. Brignole, P.T. Cummings, H.V. Kehiaian, M.T. Frenkel, J.W. Magee, T.W. de Loos, K.R. Hall, J.C. Holste, K. Fischer, G.N. Escobedo-Alvarado and B.C. Gates.
The Fifth symposium gave, for the first time, opportunity toThe School of Chemical Engineering and Extracting Industries of to the Instituto Politécnico Nacional of Mexico honoring one of its prestigious international guests. Prof. Stanley I. Sandler from the University of Delaware was selected for this occasion in recognition of his invaluable contribution to the thermodynamics field. The Thermodynamics session, organized in honor of Prof. Stanley I. Sandler, was held in Mexico City in May 29–30 2002. During this session, invited lectures and oral communications were presented and a special lunch was organized (http://www.termo.esiqie.ipn.mx/5sympeng.htm).
Luis A. Galicia-Luna, Dominique Richon and Theo W. de Loos (Guest Editors) are honoured to have been able to promote the publication of special issue of the Fluid Phase Equilibria Journal, dedicated to Stan I. Sandler.
The guest editors thank the Authorities of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Cofaa); the Director of the E.S.I.Q.I.E.; Nestor L. Díaz Ramirez; Conacyt (Grant C300424); the Deputy Director for Chemical and Transport Systems Division—NSF; RobertWellek; and the National Science Foundation for their help and financial support.
The ESIQIE organized:
- sixth edition in May 2006 (Rocky Becker, Miguel Tame Dominguez and Dominique Richon) as part of celebration of the 70 th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Instituto Politecnico Nacional,
-the seventh edition named "Ing. Stanislao Ramírez Ruiz" in May 2008 (Ram B. Gupta - Auburn University, Kenneth R. Hall - Texas A&M University, Theo W. de Loos - Delft University of Technology, Athanassios Z. Panagiotopoulos - Princeton University, Dominique Richon – Ecole des Mines de Paris and Phillip E. Savage-University of Michigan),
-the eighth edition in June 2010 (Amir H. Mohammadi, José Gerardo Cabañas Moreno and Dominique Richon)
ESIQIE will organize the Ninth Symposium, named "SIMPOQUIMIA 2012" to be held in may 23-25, 2012 with the participation of S.I. Sandler, D. Richon, and D. Keith Roper.
Mexico's Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering are in transformation process geared towards development of human resources and new processes, and enhancement of old processes to obtain environmentally safe ones that are optimized and competitive. Both national and international experts in academic and industrial fields have participated in all of these events. The current state-of-the-art on Chemical Engineering Technology was analyzed in order to identify major challenges to be faced in both areas in the short and long term.
